“Laissez les bons temps rouler!” Let the goods times roll. Fat Tuesday is quickly approaching, and I’m incredibly upset not be in the Big Easy catching a bead or two and sipping on an exceptional strong cocktail. Necessity is indeed the mother of invention, so I decided to bring all the raucous of those cobblestone streets to me. A few phone calls later, a quick trip to the grocery, and a stop by the Mardi Gras experts to get some tips; I was all set for a Fat Tuesday celebration. Intricate ironwork, low-country boils, ferns, uniquely crafted masks, elaborate costumes, bright colors of purple, gold, and green evoke images one might see walking down crowded Bourbon Street. Luckily for me my dear friends and Mardi Gras aficionados, Bettie and Annette hooked me up with all the materials I needed. Bettie is 80 years young and spent the majority of her adult life way down south in Mobile, Alabama. Arguably, Mobile is the homeplace of the Mardi Gras festivities we know today. The treasure trove of party supply goodies at their house is endless, and now my car more closely resembles a float rather than a sedan.
A traditional Fat Tuesday starts off with a good hearty breakfast of pancakes, and, of course, a Bloody Mary. Immediately a cornmeal based pancake comes to mind. For me, a trip to New Orleans is not complete until I’ve had a nice helping of shrimp and grits. So there you have it, folks, a match made it soul food heaven! We will start by making a crunchy delicious Johnny cake, and top it off with an ample helping of rich, cheesy shrimp and grits. For desert, a moon pie bananas foster. Find the recipes here:
An authentic New Orleans aesthetic can be easily achieved by incorporating some Deep South elements you already have around the house. For instance, consider using old shutters for your tabletop instead of tablecloths or placemats. (If you don’t have any shutters at your disposal; louvered sliding doors will do the trick.) Not only will shutters add a really interesting texture, you will also gain some extra space for guests and party décor. No veranda in the big easy would be complete without beautiful urns overflowing with giant ferns. Bring your best and most weathered containers inside for a surprising centerpiece. I chose to fill mine with parade loot: beads, de plumes, and, of course, wine bottles to add a bit of height. A parade route cannot be achieved without some empty bottles! Variations on the centerpiece are endless and could just as easily include fern cuttings, oak branches arranged to mimic a live oak, wildly colored feathers, glittery masks, the list goes on… A few months ago, I came across a cool iron post from an old house. The rust and peeling paint just brought to mind a French quarter veranda. Use unusual and unexpected objects as a backdrop to anchor the theme of your party. I chose to place the iron post at the head of my table and drape with mardi gras beads and masks. Incorporate traditional Mardi Gras colors into you place settings and keep your dishes simple. Clear glass dishes are perfect to showcase colorful streamers atop a gold charger. Fill empty wine glasses with taking home party favors for your guests. Let loose and party on my friends!
