Ahhhhh Labor Day. The unofficial, but official holiday that signals an end to summer and ushers in the boldly colored leaves and cooler temps of fall. Labor Day to me is a little bittersweet. Part of me yearns for fall but still wants to hang on to those airy, bright days of summer. Luckily there is a way to have both this Labor Day weekend. Echo the seasonal transition in your home or party decor by combining light, relaxed summer colors with just a hint of earthy browns and green. It’s no secret that the summer color code is one that is fresh, cool, and airy. Build on a foundation of creme, white, or a relaxed neutral. The fabrics themselves can be a weft of your choice. I usually stick with a medium thickness with a nice weight. Layer your table linens to add a nice depth and an extra luxe sensation Mixing different fabrics when layering adds a casual ease.

The abundance of spectacular wildflowers at the summer’s end is an awesome resource for arrangments around the home. On of my very favorites is Ironweed, which can be found readily growing along roadsides wooded clearings. The wispy stems have small, delicate purple flowers that almost seem like lavender growing in the Tuscan countryside.

Cut the stems long and arrange them in a mass arrangement. Mirror the newsprint placemats by tearing pages and place them in your vase to conceal the stems. Clear or colored vases, like this blue fruit jar, are great options to support the fanning stems of your arrangement. Now on to the newsprint…..

Use pages of old newsprint to create your very own custom  placemats. Simply arrange two sheets or more sheets side-by-side to accommodate the place settings. Roll leftover newsprint and secure with twine to scatter about your centerpieces. The well-worn pages are aged and brittle in just the right places.

Vintage, white dishes in an octagon shape act as a great anchor for layering dishes for your guests. Incorporate varying sets and choose a salad plate that is contrasting in color and shape. Wooden bowls add that touch of warmth and hearty, fall texture. Simple, silver flatware is casually placed or tossed about the table with little spring of ironweed.

To add a little pop of color draw inspiration from the natural world. The cool, subtle green of unripe tomatoes and apples seem to just glow against the neutral backdrop.

The green is again, repeated in the glassware. Glassware is a great place to showcase or highlight themes and colors that can set the tone for the whole affair. Stemless, etched wine glasses are the casual order of the night.
