As the days grow longer and the nights warmer, so too begins the season for outdoor entertaining. There’s just nothing quite like dining alfresco in my opinion. That being said, I just couldn’t wait another second to get outside and host a gathering.
Just a stones throw from my house sits a gorgeous old barn that had fallen into a state of disrepair over the years and became a “catch-all” for just about everything you can imagine. The menagerie of clutter even included a set of oak stairs, and oddly enough some structure that once covered an old well. Back in January, I gave it a facelift and a new lease on life as a chicken coop and potting shed. What better way to spend an impromptu spring evening than celebrating the barn’s completion with a few close friends, a couple of cocktails, and some delicious food.

When hosting an event outdoors don’t be afraid to bring your indoor furniture out, especially for small or intimate groups. I recently acquired this antique, round table at a yard sale and am obsessed with it. The white dining chairs contrast well with the green, mossy pasture.

In keeping with a rustic, agrarian theme an oversized cotton basket filled with branches acts as an anchor. I just love the texture of the weathered, handmade reeds. Vintage Pfaltzgraff ironstone dishes are simplistic alternatives to fussy, fragile china that could easily be broken at an outdoor event. Not to mention, the solid white plates are the perfect backdrop to showcase food.

Draw inspiration from the natural elements in the surrounding area. I chose to mix a combination of neutral colors that mimic the early spring landscape. For a burst of bright green, consider scattering leaves around your place settings. Red-tip leaves are evergreen and small cuttings will stay fresh without water for long periods of time. Magnolia or evergreens such as cedar or pine are also great options. Potted houseplants like ferns or mosses are perfect for a speedy, impromptu arrangement.

Naturally shed antlers, insect collections, and tortoise shells are interesting pieces to add an unexpected element.

Helpful tip number 1: DON’T FORGET TO ANCHOR large, lightweight arrangments. The bigger the rock, the better. It only takes one strong wind to topple an arrangement, and like me, you’ll find yourself right back to square one. When rearranging, the trick is to hold your tongue in just the right place!

A definite must-have for any party is a fat, lazy dog. Here you can see Murphy Brown is posted in his usual spot. Just waiting for any small morsel to fall from the table. The chill of the night was a gentle reminder that spring has yet to officially arrive. Eventually, sending everyone indoors for some heat. Although I may have bit the bullet a bit, the first outdoor party of the season was a success!
